How a heritage journey is priced

Every journey is quoted per trip, because the same route costs very different amounts in January and June, for two travellers and for six. This page explains what goes into a quote, what moves it, and the third-party costs we can show you now.

Why we do not print a single price

A price on a tour page is easy to read and usually wrong for the reader. A fifteen-day journey for two people in a deluxe room in late December has little in common, in cost, with the same route for four people in May. Printing one figure means either padding it to cover the expensive case or footnoting it until it means nothing. We prefer to send one number that is right for your dates and your party, with the workings shown.

So every tour page lists its price as “On request”. Send the form with dates, party size and the hotel level you have in mind, and the reply carries a draft itinerary and a full quote.

What a quote contains

LineWhat it coversHow it is shown
HotelsEvery night, by name, room type and boardPer night, per room
Vehicle and driverEvery transfer and site day, sized to the partyPer day
GuidesEach guide day; site specialists named by sitePer day
Site ticketsEvery visit in the itinerary, at the published ratePer person
Internal flightsNamed sectors with the fare class assumedPer person
Meals and extrasLunches listed, dinners or workshops you have chosenPer person

Because the lines are separate, a quote from us can be compared line by line with any other quote you hold. If another operator is cheaper on the same hotels, the difference is somewhere in the other lines, and you can see where.

What moves the price, in order of effect

  1. Season. December to February is the peak for hotels across the three countries; the hot months from March to May and the wet season from June are cheaper in Cambodia and Laos. Central Vietnam is quietest in its flood months, October and November, for good reason.
  2. Hotel level. The difference between a deluxe room and a suite in a heritage hotel in Hoi An or Luang Prabang can exceed the cost of every guide on the trip.
  3. Party size. One vehicle and one guide cost the same for two people as for five. Per person, four travellers pay noticeably less than two; a single traveller pays most.
  4. Internal flights. Cross-border sectors such as Da Nang to Siem Reap or Siem Reap to Luang Prabang vary in price and routing with the season.
  5. Specialist guide days. A guide who works on one site is booked for that site day; on a long journey that is several different people, each with transport and sometimes accommodation.
  6. Length. Not as much as people expect. The fixed costs of arrival and departure spread over more days in a longer trip.

What is not in the price, and why

  • International flights. You will usually find better fares and keep more control booking them yourself; we fit the itinerary to your arrival and departure.
  • Visas. Rules differ by passport for each of the three countries and change often. Apply through the official government channels.
  • Travel insurance. We are not an insurer, and a policy bought through a travel company is often a poorer fit than one you choose for your own health and age.
  • Most dinners. Evenings in Hoi An, Siem Reap and Luang Prabang are better spent choosing your own table. We include a dinner where it is part of the culture, such as the court-cuisine evening in Hue.
  • Tips. Customary in all three countries, and better given by you, directly.

How a cheaper quote is usually made

When two quotes for the same route differ markedly, the cheaper one has usually changed one of these, often without saying so:

  • One guide for the whole trip instead of site specialists, or no guide on transfer days that include a visit.
  • Hotels described by star rating rather than by name, so the room you get is chosen later.
  • Site visits at the convenient hour rather than the quiet one, because an early start lengthens the working day of the driver and the guide.
  • Shopping stops added to the route, paid for by the shops.
  • Shared vehicles or shared guides with other bookings.

None of these is dishonest in itself, and some travellers prefer the trade. What matters is knowing which one you are buying. Every itinerary on this site, from the fifteen-day journey to the Angkor week, is quoted without them.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Why are your quotes higher than some others for the same route?

Usually because of guides and timing. We book a specialist where a site has one, and plan site visits for the quiet hours, which lengthens the working day of the guide and driver. The line-by-line quote shows where the difference sits.

Do you charge for the draft itinerary?

No. The draft and the quote are free, and so are reasonable revisions before you confirm.

Can we pay in a currency other than USD?

Quotes are in USD. The payment page explains the methods we accept and the fees each one carries.

Will the price change after we confirm?

The booking terms set out when a confirmed price can change. Changes you ask for after confirming are quoted separately, in writing, before we make them.
